Now That’s Just Overwhelming!

Courage - Risk Taking

courage

Overwhelmed by the loss of their long-term leader, now suddenly he is called on to be the leader of literally millions of people waiting on his directions. Does he really have what it’s going to take? What if he blows it all?

As business leaders, we’re often faced with monumental challenges and decisions that can capture us with a spirit of fear and in trepidation. How do we muster up the courage and take the risk? Where can we turn to for help and direction?

Moses had lead God’s people, as refugees, out of Egypt towards a promised land for nearly four decades. Now on his death, Joshua is left with holding the responsibility for leading these nomadic and rebellious people.

At this critical moment, Joshua paused for a reality check. Then he received the best leadership advice for these situations. It not only applied to him but it readily applies to us, as leaders today. Check out the wisdom found in Joshua chapter one.

Recall God’s Faithfulness

God begins by reminding Joshua of His past record of faithfulness and assures him of success. 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. 5 No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.

When you’re faced with a tough decision begin

by recalling God’s faithfulness over the past years.

Reach for God’s Word/Promises

The next piece of advice is to remind Joshua to take a closer look at God’s Word and His promises.

7 "Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."

Difficult times are the best times to turn to

God’s Word and to claim His promises for your situation.

Relax in God’s Presence

Finally, God guarantees to Joshua that He will always be with him just like his predecessor. 5...As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

When overwhelmed remember that God is always with you to give you what it takes to get through!

It’s great to know that God is in control and I am not Him. I can take a deep breath; I can refocus my mind on Christ and remember what He says about resting in Him. I know I am not alone and that He will never leave me nor forsake me.

Remember the God has promised in James one, 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Applying this advice given to Joshua, can give us the courage to take the risks and make the decisions needed when faced with an overwhelming situation. Given God’s record of His faithfulness and the truth from His Word, you can be assured of His presence when making those tough decisions.
